All About Lily Chou-Chou: Shunji Iwai's Green Rice Fields
Lily Chou-Chou – Kokyu (Breath), Out-of-Print CD / 2xLP
The rice fields glow green. Boys and girls stand in the middle of them, headphones on. The wind blows and they don't move. The whole world is whatever's playing in their ears.
What is "ether"? In 2001, Shunji Iwai let a group of fourteen-year-olds name it on a BBS forum: a medium that exists only in Lily Chou-Chou's voice and keeps the world from hurting you, if only for a while.
Twenty-five years later, All About Lily Chou-Chou returns to Taiwanese cinemas in a 4K digital restoration. Few people know that the story first took root in Taiwan. It began with the Y2K Project, which Iwai launched with Edward Yang and Stanley Kwan. The original idea followed a Hong Kong singer and a Taiwanese boy, and Iwai even scouted middle schools here. That unfinished connection has now come back in another form.
The film itself was an experiment. When the project stalled, Takeshi Kobayashi's song "Kyōmei" (Resonance) brought it back to life. Iwai then built Lily holic, a fictional fan site, and posted as multiple users to drive the plot. The loneliness and devotion of countless strangers became the soul of the film.
Lily Chou-Chou is a singer Iwai invented. In the film, she is the only thing the kids believe in. In real life, produced by Kobayashi and voiced by Salyu, she released actual records. Hacken07 Jr. now offers the last out-of-print copies of Kokyu, her only original album, on Japanese CD and double vinyl.
Kobayashi composed and produced the entire album, and Iwai wrote the lyrics. Henry Hirsch, Lenny Kravitz's longtime collaborator, is on the recording credits. Salyu, who grew up singing in a choir, delivers a raw, unpolished breath. Her voice doesn't comfort; it only watches. A boy is pushed into the mud, a girl falls from a height, and the singing keeps flowing, cold and steady. It hurts more than any emotion could.
The rice fields are still the same fields. Only this time, the sound comes from the record.
